A Request For Help

I was diagnosed with ALS in 2006 and told by my doctor that I had 3 to 5 years to live. On August 13th, we dedicated the Steve Saling ALS Residence, the only fully automated, skilled service residence in the world dedicated to caring for people with ALS. I can now expect to live for decades.

This state of the art facility uses technology to replace those physical handicaps caused by ALS. I cannot speak, walk, or use my arms or hands and yet, I am independent and mobile from the time I am helped from bed until I am helped to bed. I communicate and am mobile because of technology.

The Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home Foundation has raised millions of dollars to make this dream a reality but we need your help. The operating cost associated with caring for people with ALS is extraordinary, especially if that resident is living on a ventilator.

Most people with ALS eventually wind up on Medicaid. Once on Medicaid, the State will take all of a person’s income, including Social Security benefits, except $72.80 per month to pay toward the cost of nursing home care. This allowance is probably sufficient for the normal nursing home resident who is elderly and has limited expenses. That is, however, not the case for a younger resident who is physically disabled but mentally alert and still interested in living a full life.

The ten residents of the Steve Saling ALS Residence still look forward to attending a concert or a ball game or going to the movies. It is estimated that it will cost approximately $2,000 per year per resident to make these activities possible for an annual cost of $20,000.

The Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home Foundation has established an ALS Activity Fund to provide for these extra-curricular activities and we are asking your help to fund this effort. The funds will be used only for activities directly benefiting the ALS residents. There is no overhead, staff, or any other administrative fees associated with this fund.

I don't want to discourage large donations but I hope you'll consider something that's sustainable annually. If each person would commit to an annual donation of at least $100, that would provide a powerful legacy and a strong foundation for this wonderful program.
